Matoshinos Seafood at Dom Peixe

For the freshest seafood in all of Porto, the locals unanimously recommend Matoshinos as this is where the fresh fish come in daily for distribution in Porto.  Lined up on Rua Heróis de França is a plethora of seafood restaurants with huge outdoor coal grills right on the street.  After walking past all of them, we ultimately chose Dom Peixe which seemed the most popular and it did not disappoint.

The menu was quite extensive with a large selection of appetizers, seafood dishes, and any type of fish you can imagine.

Since we were in Portugal, we had to start off with some sardines. These were lightly battered, fried, and actually larger and meatier than others I've had which was a nice surprise.

We also tried the codfish balls and grilled andouille sausage as appetizers as well.  The codfish balls were yummy pillowy puffs with huge chunks of fresh cod inside.  The sausage was incredibly savory and smelled too good when it arrived that I started chowing down and didn't take a picture.

For our mains, we had the grilled sea bass, grilled squid, sautéed veggies, and salad.  The grilled sea bass and squid were well seasoned and you could taste the smoky goodness of it being prepared over hot coals.

We dined outside near the grill and throughout dinner, we noticed them continuously searing creme brulee's over the hot grill using a metal round dish and just had to try one for dessert. It was nice and light with a sweet candied topping to tie it altogether.

Overall we really enjoyed our meal and I agree with the locals.  This was the best seafood I've had in Porto.
